Spining Tunnel

The spinning tunnel we built in the summer of 2003, and it took us a few weeks of working on it off and on to finish it. This how to, is more of a guide and documentaion of how we procded to make ours rather than full instructions. Im not shure about the cost but it would probably be in the range of a few hundred dollars to make. Our tunnel consists of two wooden rings made from three layers of 1/4" plywood connected to each other by 6, ten foot steel pipes. The entire cylinder is held up four bycile wheels

To start off cut the
plywood into two 12" x 9" rectangles using a table saw or skill saw. If
you want you can round two corners on one of the 12" sides of both pieces of
plywood (See Picture). Once that is done cut a 1' section of 2" x 4". If you are
going to paint the dolly I suggest that you paint one side of the plywood pieces
and one of the 2" sides of the 2" x 4" now, because once it is assembled it will
be hard to paint the inside.
Now that you have all the wood cut take the two pieces of
plywood and your 2" x 4" and screw one piece of the plywood onto each of the 4"
sides of the 2" x 4" at the bottom of the plywood (See Picture). Note: do not
put any screws near the center of the 2" x 4" because this is where the axle for
the wheels will go. Now measure 6" in and 1 3/4" from the bottom and mark the
center with a pencil. Once you have the center of the 2" x 4" marked drill a
1/2" hole through the assembly. Again if you are going to paint the dolly now is
the time to finish painting it.
Once the 1/2" hole has been drilled and the paint is dry put
the 1/2" axle through the hole drilled in the assembly and then put a washer and
a nut on either side but only hand tighten it (See Picture). Once that is done
put a wheel on either side then use the Stop Nuts to bolt them into place. Now
see if the axle needs to be cut shorter, if so measure how much and disassemble
the wheels and cut the axle to the right length. Finally put the axle and wheels
back together and tighten the bolts, and your finished.
